Hybrid Packaging Tape: When Standard Tape Won't Hold

Most packing lines have a box like this. It left the building sealed. It arrived with one flap standing up and a strip of tape curled back on itself. The tape still has plenty of stick left. It never really held on in the first place.

Usually the tape itself isn't faulty. What changed is the box. Cartons today are mostly recycled board, and recycled board is a harder surface to stick to than most people assume. That is the gap hybrid adhesive tapes were made for. This guide uses one of them, SB Tape Group's SBT840, to show what the difference is and when it's worth paying for.

Why tape lets go of recycled boxes

Virgin kraft is made from long wood fibres that lie flat and tight. Recycled testliner has been pulped more than once, so its fibres are shorter and broken, and the surface carries more loose fibre and dust. Some liners are also treated with starch for strength.

Tape adhesive has to reach the fibres to hold. On recycled board, part of it lands on the dust layer instead, and when the box is under stress that thin layer is what gives way. So the tape comes off with a coat of fluff on it and the box underneath looks clean. If you have ever seen that on a returned parcel, that's the failure.

The two usual tapes, and where each struggles

Standard polypropylene packing tape comes in two main adhesive families. We stock both in our 48 mm tapes range.

• Water-based acrylic. Clear, quiet off the roll, and stable over time. Its weakness is the first few seconds: it needs firm pressure to build its bond, and it grabs less on dusty or cold surfaces.
• Solvent natural rubber. Grabs instantly and copes with cold boxes. The trade-off is ageing: heat and sunlight can make it yellow and lose strength over months, so it's less suited to stock that sits in a hot container.

A hybrid adhesive aims to sit between the two: a fast first grab like rubber, with the longer life of acrylic. SB Tape Group describes SBT840 as the "best alternative to solvent rubber OPP tape" and says it works "especially well on challenging recycled corrugate and fiberboard".

What SBT840 actually specifies

These are the figures published on the manufacturer's product page. The page doesn't name the test methods behind them, so if you're comparing tapes side by side, ask for the full technical data sheet and compare like for like.

Several figures are given as ranges (for example 5.5 to 9.0) rather than single values. The data sheet should show which variant gives which figure, so check the exact one you are ordering.

Where it earns its place

Cold warehouses and cold chain

Acrylic tape applied to a cold box can look fine at first and then lift once the box has been moved about. A tape rated for application down to -15 °C removes that guesswork for chilled stores and winter loading bays.

Automatic case sealers

On a case taper the tape gets a fraction of a second of roller pressure, which is exactly where acrylic is weakest. A faster-grabbing adhesive means fewer boxes pulled off the line to be re-taped. The manufacturer lists auto carton sealer lines as a main use and sells jumbo rolls (1280 and 1610 mm wide) for converters.

Heavy or overfilled boxes

When a box is packed tight, the flaps push up against the tape for the whole journey. That constant load is what holding power measures. For heavy loads, pair a strong tape with double wall boxes so the board isn't the weak point instead.

• Choose a hybrid tape such as SBT840 if tape lifts on recycled boxes, you pack or store below about 5 °C, or your case sealer rejects boxes for poor seals. We can source it to order.

What is hybrid packaging tape?

It is polypropylene packing tape with a hybrid acrylic copolymer adhesive. The aim is the quick grab of solvent rubber tape with the ageing resistance of acrylic tape. It suits recycled boxes, cold packing areas and automatic case sealers, where standard acrylic tape can lift.

Why does tape come off recycled boxes?

Recycled board has shorter fibres and more loose dust on its surface. Part of the adhesive sticks to that dust instead of the fibres, so under stress the dust layer gives way. You see it as tape that peels away with fluff on its back while the box looks clean.

Which tape works best in the cold?

Do I need special tape for a case sealer?

Most standard tapes run on case sealers, but the machine gives the tape only a brief press. A tape with a fast initial grab, such as solvent rubber or a hybrid adhesive, seals more reliably at speed. Check the roll width and core size your machine takes.
